CABASSET
| Cabasset was an open helmet worn by foot soldiers in the second half of the 16th century and throughout the 17th century. It has a narrow brim and usually has a curious little point projecting from the top. The name is Italian and means pear, and the little point is supposed to represent the stem. The real fuction of the little point is unknown. The helmet being pointed or cone head, would allow sword blows to glance off. Most cabassets are plan but a few are etched or embosed. Some fake cabassets are casted to look like embosed helmets. |
