Sword Collector Information Page

Naval Officer Sword with an eagle head pommel was made in the 1830's and 1840's. This type of sword varies from maker to maker and even from the same maker. The guards and pommel were cast using lost wax method from a wood model and then hand finished and assembled to meet a customer's request. Because they were made one at a time, the finish of the swords varies, as they would not have a sword to copy from. The style of the sword varied depending on the cost value of the sword to be sold.

The guard has Liberty sitting, anchor, eagle and a ship in the background. The blade length is 32 inches and the over all length is 37 inches. The blade decoration varies but most are engraved with bluing and gold on 6 to 10 inches and most of these blades were imported from Germany. Grips on these typies of naval officer swords are found made of ivory or bone.
