An Antique Flintlock Powder Tester, circa 18th century. Overall length 9 inches; Italian or Dutch and is in good working order.
This Flintlock Powder Tester has a powder tube running perpendicular to the action.
Upon firing, the discharge of the powder drives a lever on a friction ratchet,
The iron pointer (attached to the ratchet) points to a calibration numbers 1 to 15 on the housing covering the ratchet. The more force of the discharge from the black powder being tested would give you a higher calibration number indicating a better / more powerful black powder.
