A Good British Royal Navy Flintlock Long Sea Service Contract Pistol by REA, circa 1775. The 12-inch ong, .577 cal. (regulation) round steel barrel has two private proofs; a "CROWN" over GP and a "CROWN" over V with a Crown inspector mark and barrel maker mark: a "CROWN" over IR (John Rea, Free of Founders Co. by redemption and took Livery, 1774. Elected Assistant, 1793; Master, 1796, 1805. Gunmaker, 122 Minories, 1777-1778; 91 Minories, 1779-97; Became John Rea & Sons; Contractor to East India Co. 1778-1804., pp. 165-166). Brass contract regulation furniture; Lock marked REA and a small "CROWN" over 2 (East India Company Inspector, Tower of London). Stock has a period repaired chip just behind the barrel tang and a small period repaired chip on the upper edge of the left side at muzzle otherwise, solid with normal scratches and dings from years of service. All steel parts have a wonderful untouched dark age patina. The overall length of this flintlock pistol is 19.5 inches and is in good working order. This is a beautiful Sea Service pistol that may have seen service in the American Revolutionary War.
