Emerson & Silver manufactured edges weapons form 1810 to 1868. James E. Emerson is listed as being in business from 1810 in Beaver Falls PA. In 1830, he formed the EMERSON SMITH & CO which invented a new knife making process. During the American Civil War from 1860 to 1865, James E. Emerson and Joseph S. Silver formed the company, EMERSON & SILVER in Trenton, New Jersey . The company had U.S. contracts for bayonets, swords and sabers (see list below), and also made other items, that included plows and axes. They owned the Keysone Edge Tool Works Factory in Philadelphia PA and the Malleable Iron Works Factory in Trenton NJ (all swords made at Trenton) and had offices in New York from 1860 to 1864. With James E. Emerson as partner, in 1865 the name was changed to JOSEPH E. SILVER & CO and moved to New York. In 1866, the name was changed again to JOSEPH S. SILVER JR and continued to manufacture farm and edge tools along with regalia items.

Emerson & Silver Civil War Edged Weapon Production U.S. contract for 20,000 bayonets of the James E. Emerson patent (1862). U.S. contract for 27,060 Model 1860 cavalry sabers. U.S. contract for 3,000 Model 1840 musician's swords. U.S. contract for 12,000 Model 1840 non-commissioned officers swords. U.S. contract for Model 1840 light artillery sabers in 1863. (Some Model 1840 light artillery sabers used Model 1860 cavalry blades.) Made Model 1850 Foot Officers swords. Made Model 1850 Staff and Field Officers swords Made many presentation swords. Imported British infantry honeysuckle-hilt officers swords.
