Battle Damage During the English Civil War (1642-1649)
The English Lobstertailed helmet was made prior to the English Civil War (circa 1630) but did see service in the war. The left front center show at least three sword hits that resulted in damage to the helmet and who ever was wearing it probably had a very bad day. Armor does provide some protection but a hard hit will cause severe injury. The photo below shows 17th century repair using rivets and brazing so that it could be put back into service use by the military. The face guard bar was removed before or at the time of the damage repair. This style on helmet never did have ear flaps (cap brim extends to rear neck guard).
