11 Mar 09 - We just returned from two shows at Louisville KY State Fair Grounds. Both shows were “good” considering everything that is going on today. We sold the Big Gun which made me happy that I did not need to carry 50+ pounds of gun back to the truck.
One bad thing happened during the set-up at the National Gun Day Show on Friday. They announced over the load speaker that a large rifle was stolen off a table. A very short time later as I was walking toward the back door of the show I noticed a dealer walking very slowly and strangely (not looking at anyone) away from the building carrying loaded 3 rifle cases. When I went into the back of the show there was NO guard at the back the back door. I found the guard about 100 feet from the door talking to a driver of a car (pull in unloading area). Finally, I got the guard to walk outside at the back door and look. By that time the dealer was in the middle of the back field area. He called in on the radio about the guy carrying the 3 gun cases. He then turned to me and said “We are looking for a person that stole ONE gun, not THREE. So it can’t be him”. Then the guard walked away from the door back to where he was talking to the driver of the car (leaving nobody watching who comes and goes through the back door). So, I ran to the front door of the building where the people running the show has their tables. I told one of the ladies behind the table what happened. She said I need to talk to the head of security, and he was getting a police officer. At that point he walked through the front door with a police officer. I told him the whole story and told him that someone should go out back and check this dealer out. His answer shocked me. “He’s probably gone and I don’t want to bother”. Later when I was bring more of my stuff into the show through the back door, I saw the same dealer walking back across the field (towards the show) carrying the same 3 gun cases. Note: There was no guard at the back door at this time.
Did this dealer steal the gun? I don’t know, but he should have been checked out. These things did not look correct:
1. Dealer carrying guns out of the show at the very beginning of the set-up for the show shortly after the gun was stolen.
2. Going out the back door when no guard was around the check.
3. Walking very slowly with head looking down and not looking or eye contact with anybody.
4. Carrying the same gun cases back to the show later.
I had a shop in downtown San Diego for years. You learn to look and read people; it is the only way to stay safe in a rough area. I was so mad I did not get into the face of the promoter that runs the show because I would probably got kicked out of the show for telling him that the show’s security sucks (a lot more “colorful” words would have been used). I needed to stay and try to make money. As it turns out, I did not sell much because the way the promoter has the show laid out. The right side of the show is new guns, then antiques, then gun parts and to the far left are “military” items. In the Military Section, there are new guns, antique guns, gun parts and military items. I’m stuck in the military section; that is where my tables are located. On Saturday, the first day of the show, thousands of people slowly entered to show. They waited in line for hours because the promoter has a very poor method of selling tickets and getting them into the show. Most people turn right when entering the show. By the time they get to the “gun parts” section, they are tired and probably think there is nothing more than gun parts for the rest of the show, and go home. While the right side of the gun show was crowded, the left side of the show (military section) was nearly empty. I had more public looking at my tables Sunday afternoon than I did all day Saturday (and made more sales). If the promoter gets people by your table and you do not sell; it is that dealers fault, but if nobody goes by your table, it is the promoter fault. There were a lot of unhappy dealers in the area near my tables. In these hard times, the promoter needs to work harder at making the public happier and make improvements to give dealers a better chance in selling to the public.
